Barbara Belseth

Barbara Belseth writes historical fiction that brings the past to life through stories of faith, family, and perseverance. Her novels explore the challenges and triumphs of ordinary people facing extraordinary circumstances, inviting readers into richly detailed settings filled with hope and heart.

In Plenteous Grace, Barbara transports readers to the Blackstone River Valley in 1918, where Norwegian immigrants pursue the American dream during the final months of World War I and the devastating Spanish Flu pandemic. Through compelling characters and authentic historical detail, she captures the struggles of adapting to a new culture while holding firmly to faith and family traditions.

Barbara’s stories celebrate courage, resilience, and the enduring power of God’s grace. Her characters confront hardship, loss, and uncertainty, yet they discover strength through faith, love, and community. By weaving history and inspiration together, she creates novels that entertain while offering encouragement and hope.

Readers who enjoy inspirational historical fiction, immigrant family sagas, and stories of faith overcoming adversity will find Barbara Belseth’s books both captivating and uplifting. Her novels remind us that even in life’s most difficult seasons, grace remains abundant and hope endures.

Barbara Belseth grew up in Hudson, Massachusetts surrounded by her warm extended Norwegian family.  Beside ‘the lake’ where she spent summers with cousins and family, her favorite place was the library. Barbara studied English at UMass and then spent nearly 20 years aloft as a flight attendant for a major airline. She returned to the classroom to teach English to high school language learners. Retired today, after teaching students from over 50 different countries, Barbara lives in northern Virginia near her family and grandchildren, where she is involved with community bible study and writing and quilting.

In 1918, the Blackstone River Valley, birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, offers jobs and hope to immigrants seeking a better life. But America also brings unexpected hardships. As World War I nears its end, the Spanish Flu sweeps across Massachusetts.

Norwegian immigrants Trygve and Valle (rhymes with “Bali”) Lee must face sickness, uncertainty, and the fragility of life. Can they hold on to their faith in God through it all? Will the medical care of the day save Trygve’s life?

The family also faces danger on a perilous voyage across the cold North Atlantic as they return to Norway. There they discover that going home can be even more challenging than adapting to American culture.

Follow the Lee family as they build a new life in small-town America. Separated from relatives and far from their Norwegian community, they rely on faith and each other. Their children bring warmth and humor as they navigate two very different cultures. Through every trial and triumph, God’s plenteous grace surrounds Trygve, Valle, and their three children.
